ROAMING
In many countries, most companies allow roaming, that is, connecting to local networks directly with your operator. Before your trip, we recommend checking if this option is active on your phone, and if you are unsure, you can contact your company’s customer service. Also, check the costs of calls and internet so you are not caught off guard by unpleasant and expensive surprises. Each telephone company has its own roaming fees, but fortunately, the European Commission has abolished roaming surcharges within the European Union territory. However, additional costs are applied if certain thresholds are exceeded. Be careful, especially when using the internet, as many applications connect automatically and may download files directly, potentially reaching the higher price threshold easily without realizing it. Prices also vary depending on the region you are in. They are divided into three zones: one including the European Union and its economic area, the second Canada, Maghreb, and the rest of Europe, and the third the rest of the world. Each with its own rates. Therefore, we recommend evaluating if this option is the most suitable for the place you want to travel to.
PREPAID SIM CARD
A very good option for those who plan to use the phone intensively or for those traveling for a longer period is to buy a local sim card. Especially if you are traveling in zone two or three, which could lead to higher costs with roaming. In this case, you will only need to have an unlocked phone where you can insert a new sim card during the days of the trip. You won’t be able to receive calls on your usual number (unless you have a Dual Sim phone), but you can leave messaging apps active such as WhatsApp or Messenger, which only require an internet connection. The costs in this case will depend on the value of the new Sim Card and the rate of your interest. You should consider whether you primarily need data for internet access or if you also need to make calls and send messages. Some SIM cards offer data-only plans while others also include voice and messaging services. Also, consider the amount of data you will need during your trip. If you plan to use data-intensive applications like streaming or video calls, you may need a plan with a higher data allowance.
